Alum Jon Haupt promoted to Lieutenant

The Farmington Hills Police Officer Sgt. Jon Haupt was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in July. Haupt was hired as a police officer in 1994. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2006. He has served in the Patrol Division and Investigative Division.

The Schoolcraft College culinary graduate and metro Detroit native has worked in fine-dining restaurants around the world and, early in his career, competed in numerous international Culinary Olympics events.

Alum Chef helps Schoolcraft develop 4-year programs

When Schoolcraft began entertaining the idea of four-year programs, Chef Shawn Loving says, officials wanted to offer students a chance to learn about nutrition as well as the business side of the industry. The new degree programs reflect that, he says, and they will provide an “opportunity for students to get jobs in different areas,” such as the nutrition and dietary fields as well as culinary management.

Alum Chef Dino Grossi

Chef/proprietor Dino Grossi has opened a new location for his four star restaurant – Volare Ristorante. What sets Volare apart, is the handling of impeccable ingredients, many of them imports from Italy, and others from quality sources here, by a staff that makes pretty much everything that emerges from the glass-walled kitchen visible behind the bar.

Alumni Gives Back

Schoolcraft College alumnus, Joshua York, began the York Project; a business that sells clothing and donates hats, shirts and other apparel to the homeless in Detroit. Similar to Tom’s Shoes, the company donates an article of clothing for every piece it sells.

Dearborn’s Mei Lin is the new Top Chef

As Wednesday night’s episode began, Lin said she was there “to conquer it all … to win Top Chef.” Mei Lin covered her face with her hands in stunned surprise when judge Padma Lakshmi declared her the winner.

Compliments to the chef

After graduating from Schoolcraft’s culinary program in 2007, Mei Lin spent time training with some of the most respected chefs in the industry, including Michael Symon, Marcus Samuelsson and Wolfgang Puck, in Las Vegas before moving to West Hollywood to join “Top Chef” season six winner Michael Voltaggio’s opening team.

Decorated Navy SEAL Brett Marihugh died in Accident

Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Brett Allen Marihugh, 34, passed away after being involved in a training accident at a naval training base in Norfolk, Va. Brett was a 2005 graduate of Schoolcraft College.

Alumni Chef featured by the Detroit News

Chef Chris Gadulka received a degree in 1998 from Schoolcraft College in culinary arts. He is now the chef/partner at the Fleming’s Steakhouse and Wine Bar in Birmingham. He believes, “You need to be passionate about the food on the plate and know why it’s on the plate.” This article even reveals one of Chris’ grandmother’s recipies!
