Uncovering Purpose: Sophia Mark’s Story
Sophia Mark was certain she would never go to college, but support from the Schoolcraft College Foundation following a spur-of-the-moment decision changed her life. She graduated high school with a 2.3 GPA, confident that her academic journey was finished. Four years later, she was not only a model student at Schoolcraft College, but a shining representative as the previous 2025-2026 recipient of the Foundation Scholar award.
The title is given to a student every year who displays exceptional merit during their time at Schoolcraft. The Foundation awards these students a $6,000 scholarship in recognition of their hard work and accomplishments. For Mark, it wasn’t just about tuition, even though it funded most of her time at Schoolcraft. Becoming the Foundation Scholar gave her the stability and confidence she needed to bet on herself.
She was the runner up for the Student Employee of the Year award and winner of the Social Impact and Belonging category at the Celebration of Stars: student employee award ceremony. She was also the first-place winner of the Pythagorean Prize, a scholarship for exemplary mathematicians.
“I’ve learned who I am here,” Mark said. “I had no intention of going to college. I just enrolled because I liked math, and now I’m a Foundation Scholar. It was like I finally found my potential. I realized that I could work as a leader and prove to myself that I wasn’t just almost a high school dropout.”
This fund helped her pay for classes that fostered her passion and solidified an enjoyment for learning she didn’t know she was capable of. Predating her tumultuous relationship with high school, Mark’s passion for math is just as strong as when it began.
“I grew up very poor, and I never want to be in that kind of situation again,” Mark said “So knowing that I could be in an engineering or project management position, it could change the way that I felt growing up. So, that’s definitely something that’s nice, just thinking about how it would be really great if I had that, and that’s what this scholarship has done for me.”
Counting on Numbers
“I was brushing my teeth,” Mark said. “My dad was teaching me about multiplication. I thought ‘what happens if you multiply one by two?’ and I realized that it would be the same answer no matter what rule I followed, and that was when I realized math is perfect.”
Ever since childhood, she has had numbers to count on. Her mother taught the subject to high schoolers, and she inherited that love of puzzle-solving.One summer, her mother gave her an unlikely gift: a math textbook. Mark was elated, and spent summer nights reading it cover to cover as if it were a novel.
Today, that passion goes beyond multiplication tables and books. It was these traits alongside her mom’s urging that convinced Mark to enroll at Schoolcraft, two years after she had graduated high school, and two months before the semester began.
It wasn’t long before Mark realized that the pressure of high school was no longer an insurmountable obstacle, and she found herself determined to earn her spot on the Dean’s List.
“That was the point where I said ‘okay, I’m going to just start putting my all into this,’ and that’s what I’ve done,” Mark said. “I eat, sleep and breathe math. That’s just what I do now. I pour all my time and attention into school. I was like, ‘wait, I can actually get a 4.0, this is great,’ and that was it for me.”
Once she accomplished that, she knew she was in the right place. With renewed confidence, Mark gives back to the community that uplifted her as a Math 101-240 tutor and Calculus Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Leader.
“I think that everybody should work on their own timeline, and once they find out who they are and what they love, that’s when it’s going to fall into place for them,” Mark said. “It’s really important for people to find what they love before they go and commit to something.”
Aiming for the Stars
Now that she has achieved a wide variety of accomplishments at Schoolcraft, Mark looks towards her future with newfound excitement instead of dread. Her time as a student leader has inspired her to pursue a career in project management. She’s no stranger to leadership, and she’s eager to meet the challenge head-on with the same pride she found atSchoolcraft
“My dream job has always been NASA,” Mark said. “I’ve always been interested in propulsion systems like in rockets and spaceships. If I could lead a team that’s working on those, that would be really cool.”
Mark is one of the many students that the Foundation has aided on their journey by removing barriers, recognizing potential and empowering her to be the best version of herself. When presented with the opportunity to flourish with the Foundation Scholar Award, she accepted the challenge with a passion that was always in her. She always looked towards the future, but this accomplishment guided her path forward.
“I’m very motivated by the future and just being able to work every day,” Mark said. “So being in engineering or project management could change my life. Besides doing math, I love getting up and going to work. That’s just it. I’m such a hard worker.”
Mark was accepted into the University of Michigan College of Engineering to study Industrial and Operations Engineering.
From a near-high school dropout to an inspirational success story, Mark’s future is just beginning, and the Foundation’s investment in her is already paying off.
